Project Overview

This project involved the construction and long-term protection of large-capacity fuel depots for the United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

One of the key challenges was protecting the steel tank roofs from corrosion due to constant exposure to fuel vapors. A specialized epoxy coating—resistant to oils and fuels—was applied to ensure superior adhesion to steel and long-term corrosion resistance.

Another challenge was sealing the junction between the concrete flooring and steel tank bases. Structural movement often created small gaps that allowed water and moisture to seep in, threatening the tanks’ integrity. To address this, a high-performance, UV-resistant elastomeric sealant with exceptional flexibility was used, accommodating movement while providing a watertight seal.

Additional works included installing epoxy flooring systems for canopies and parking areas, creating a durable, chemical-resistant, and low-maintenance surface. Roofs and ceilings of facility buildings were also waterproofed using a two-component cementitious coating, ensuring reliable and lasting moisture protection.

Outcome

The project delivered a fully integrated protective solution, significantly extending the service life of the depots. The works enhanced operational safety, reduced maintenance needs, and ensured resilience against Darfur’s harsh environmental conditions—maintaining performance for over two decades.
